Energy company ENGIE has appointed Niroshma Chetty as ENGIE Generation Australia MD, which strengthens the company’s leadership across a complex portfolio of thermal, rehabilitation and emerging energy assets.

Chetty will oversee ENGIE’s Yuri renewable hydrogen project, the Hazelwood rehabilitation programme and its South Australian thermal assets.

Based in Melbourne, she will also take responsibility for health, safety and environment, and security functions across the portfolio.

Generation portfolios globally are under increasing pressure to balance reliability, cost and transition requirements. Managing a mix of legacy thermal assets, rehabilitation programmes and new energy developments requires operational discipline and a clear understanding of how different technologies contribute to system stability.

“Navigating a portfolio that spans thermal generation, rehabilitation and emerging energy projects requires a strong focus on execution and performance.

“Each asset plays a different role in the system, and the challenge is to ensure they operate reliably while supporting the transition to a lower-carbon energy mix over time,” says Chetty.

Further, the decision to appoint Chetty reflects the company's broader approach to developing leadership across markets and deploying experienced operators into roles where delivery and performance are critical.

Its global footprint enables it to transfer capabilities between regions, particularly in markets undergoing a structural energy transition.

Her appointment underscores ENGIE's focus on building leadership capacity to operate across technologies, geographies and market structures while maintaining consistent standards of performance, safety and delivery, it says.

Chetty, who hails from South Africa, served as the CEO of Avon and Dedisa Peaking Power, which comprises two open-cycle gas turbine plants that support grid stability.

Her experience spans infrastructure finance, operations, and project development, with a track record that includes leading projects through financial close and into steady-state operations, ENGIE says.

Further, Chetty has served as a nonexecutive director across several renewable-energy businesses, including solar PV and hybrid operations, which further strengthens her exposure to multi-technology portfolios, ENGIE says.
